Greece Beyond the Postcard: Why Hydra and Nafplio Are the Real Discovery

Everyone knows Santorini. The blue domes. The white walls. The sunset over the caldera. They are as beautiful in person as in photographs, and if you've never been, they should be on your list.

But here is what we've learned after decades of taking clients to Greece: the Greece that produces the memories clients talk about for the rest of their lives is Hydra.

Hydra: The Car-Free Island

Hydra is an island in the Saronic Gulf, about two hours by ferry from Athens. It has no cars. No motorcycles. No scooters. This prohibition — maintained since the 1950s — has preserved something extraordinary. The harbor is lined with stone mansions built by 18th-century sea captains. The cats outnumber the tourists on most days. The fishing boats come in every morning and the catch goes to the restaurants that evening.

We include two nights on Hydra in our Greece trips. It is, consistently, the part that clients mention first when they come home.

Nafplio: The City That Most Travelers Miss

Nafplio sits on the Peloponnese coast, an hour and a half from Athens. It was the first capital of modern Greece after independence in 1821. Above the city, the Palamidi Fortress rises 216 meters on a sheer rock face. The climb — 999 steps — rewards with one of the best views in the Mediterranean.

Below the city, the sea is right there. Tables at restaurants literally hang over it. The octopus drying on lines in the sun goes into the dishes you order an hour later.

Greece's islands are under significant pressure from cruise ship tourism. Hydra has been somewhat protected by its car-free status — the island simply cannot accommodate the mass tourism infrastructure that other islands have developed.
